Getting into Leeds for 2026/27

The version of the visa story that doesn’t bury the answer. Rules current as of . This is reference material, not legal advice — when stakes are high, double-check the official ministry source.

Emergency: 999 (police, ambulance, fire). 112 also works.

Visa-free entry — by where your passport is from

  • US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Singapore, EU/EEA

Up to 6 months as a visitor (single entry).

Generous compared to Schengen, but you must convince the officer it's genuine tourism, not de facto residence.

  • British / Irish citizens

Unlimited (CTA — Common Travel Area).

Before you travel: ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation)

Cost
£10 per person.
Valid for
2 years or until passport expiry (whichever is sooner). Multiple entries.

Mandatory for visa-exempt non-Brits, including US/EU/AU citizens. Apply online; same-day in most cases.

Staying longer: the digital-nomad route

No dedicated digital nomad visa (closest: Innovator Founder visa)

If you're a salaried remote employee, the UK doesn't offer a clean route. Visitor visa caps you at 6 months and bars 'work for a UK business'.

Duration
Innovator Founder is a 3-year visa for founders building UK-based businesses with endorsement.
Income requirement
£1,270 in personal funds + endorsement from a UK-recognised body.

Edge · The Standard Visitor visa explicitly allows remote work for a non-UK employer during a stay — for trips, not residence.

Gotchas — what most people get wrong

  • Border force can and will ask for proof of funds + onward travel + accommodation. 'I'll figure it out' is a refusal.

  • Working for a UK employer or doing client work for UK-based clients on a Visitor visa is illegal — even on a remote-work-friendly entry.

  • London's contactless transport is brilliant but only works with a foreign card if you tap one card per traveller. Apple Pay through the same device twice = blocked turnstile.

  • Tipping is uneven. 'Optional service charge' on the bill is not optional in tourist areas — check.
